Tell It Like You See it Day

Would you be willing to admit that you didn't like a room featured in Domino Magazine?

While I generally write about things related to interior design that make my heart sing, today I want to address a subject that seems to be a bit taboo in the blogosphere, admitting that you don't like something that everyone else seems to love. What comes to mind is the Hans Christian Anderson tale of The Emperor's New Clothes. Why aren't more bloggers like the little child who asks why the guy is naked?

Design is all about personal preference. One person's idea of fabulous may leave another wanting to gouge his or her eyes out. I could safely admit that I detest silk flower arrangements with a passion that extends further than the BP oil spill. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone on that one. But what if a blogger admitted that he or she didn't like graphic wallpaper, zebra rugs, anything with a quatrefoil design, the color turquoise, Lonny or the work of Jonathan Adler? Would said blogger be crucified?

I may be taking a risk here, but today I am hosting a first, Tell It Like You See it Day.

I know I'm' in the minority here, but I detest foo dogs, I don't care if they are the height of Chinoiserie chic, a style I admire, I think they are the most heinous looking things on the planet.
There, I said it. It feels good to get that off my chest.

Now it's your turn. Is there a popular trend or style that you secretly loathe? You can share, you're in a safe place.

  1. It's funny you mention this, because when Domino magazine was being published I didn't buy it because I didn't like the style. I think I bought one issue and didn't really like it so I didn't look at it again. I now appreciate the rooms more that I've been exposed to them, and would likely make a different choice if it was still being published. Oh - and though they look good in other people's homes, I would never use a zebra rug or antlers. It's just not my style.

  2. I wouldn't know where to begin. So, I'll just throw a big one out there. I don't like carpet. I mean, I know it's a staple, but I don't like the way it looks, I don't like the way it feels on my bare feet and most of all it is a pain to keep clean.

Though it isn't design related thing, I cannot for the life of me understand the obsession with Vera Bradley handbags. To me they are hideously ugly.

  3. Great idea! I really don't care for those French hooded winged back chairs, popularized by Kelly Wearstler and now showing up in Restoration hardware. I have posted on them, I think they are so ugly!

  4. Cool idea! I'm so tired of seeing the Knoll's Sarineen "tulip" table. It's a little cold for me.

And just like Design Esquire wrote, I didn't like Domino magazine at first either. I thought it was odd - but it has since grown on me.

  5. I almost always hate anything I see that's been designed by Kelly Wearstler. To my eyes, most of her rooms look like they're off the set of the Austin Powers movies.

  6. What a great idea! I have to say that I do not care for side tables with fabric covers that go all the way to the floor. I always prefer all wood side tables, and the fabric has always looked out of place to me.

(man it feels nice to say that out loud! :) )

  7. First of all I have to agree with you completely about the Foo Dogs. They don't do a single thing for me.

I also didn't care much for Domino at first, mostly because the items and rooms they featured didn't translate well into real life for me (design and cost wise). But many bloggers have done budget conscience room boards inspired by Domino pictures that are just great!

One dislike that comes to mind is damask printed fabric. It seems like everyone uses that black and white damask to recover the seats of dining room type chairs and then pairs it with a bright glossy paint. I just think it's a look that is going to expire pretty quickly and looks cheap.

ps. This is kind of fun! :)

  8. Love this post! You are so cute! I would say off the top of my head most wall decals irritate me unless they are done right. Oh and rustic stuff, I love it if it's paired with some glamorous pieces otherwise it just looks like the inside of a nice barn! Lol gosh I hope I don't sound mean! Luvs

  9. Well, you don't have to worry about offending me! I'm not as knowledgeable of design as some and didn't even know what these were called! lol

For me, if I don't like it, I'm not using it. However, if someone else has it, I would never tell them I don't like it!! However, usually when used in good taste, most things can look good in a quality styled room!

  10. Good Will. I think that it is the trashiest second hand store around. I'd much rather go to a locally owned thrift store. Thank you for this. Now I can sleep at night.

  11. For me it's the Chiang Mai fabric. I was so surprised the first time I heard a blogger gushing about it. I just don't get it.

  12. Dead animal parts hanging on walls. Rust.

  13. You're too funny! We should all do this more often! The first thing that came to mind was exactly what Susan over at the Zhush said!!! I hate those hooded chairs! If I want the look of a coffin I'll put an old one in my room and probably save some money! i can't wait to see what everyone else says! Great post Dear!

  14. I honestly think I have been talked in to liking ikat, because until recently I detested it. It's growing on me, but I really only think that's because of the sheer volume of it in the blogosphere.

I also detest the word "blogosphere."

  15. great post, I think foo dogs are cute; but they would not end up in my house not my style - lol I'm not a huge fan of the overly modern look ick or alot of Eames chairs - there just so so and trying to hard to be cool

  16. I think it's important to speak up -- more often than not, you'll find you aren't alone anyway! Though I'll admit I like foo dogs. :)

What I hate: Belgian style. Too gray. Too nubbly. Too....bleh.

  17. How funny. I usually like every single design trend. I'm trying really hard to think of something i don't like. I may have to get back to you on this one...... :)

  18. This is great. I admit I like foo dogs. Can't it explain it, I just do. What I don't like are the sputnik lamps. They remind me of something out of star trek or something. I just don't get a good feeling when I see them.

  19. This is real heresy, but I really don't like all white rooms.....I don't like gray unless it's mixed with something warm, and I don't want a slipcover on any of my furniture....There!

  20. I love your gutsy post idea! My blog profile says I post about the things I love...or don't. And I'm sure it turns some off. But that's okay! I am with you on foo dogs. I'll also go on record as saying a full on Hollywood Regency space is just not for me - particularly highly glossed up furniture in bright colors and trellis with nothing to taper it. It's just too much. Oh, and exposed bars. I like to put things away...

  21. Ok - I am just going to come out and say it. I do not get the whole tassel thing. What is the attraction? It just looks like something that would get very dusty. Or like a cat toy. (Perhaps that is just cause I have cats.) I hope all of you that love tassels don't hate me now!

  22. I hate animal print of any kind, on anything, but especially clothing, and rugs.

  23. It's good to take risks-I like this post. I've never actually been a huge fan of Domino magazine.

I'm not into crazy busy prints like in oriental rugs. I don't like tapestries and overly formal traditional style drapery is just so gaudy in my opinion. Thankfully I've only had one of those as design clients and he had already had the drapery part installed a couple years prior.

I'm also not a fan of buddha statues, could be because he's ugly or that it just doesn't at all represent my personal faith. Not sure, just doesn't appeal to me. I'm with you on the foo dogs too!

  24. BTW-I just read your comment-thank you. You pose a great question, and I'm going to answer it this Thursday in the form of a Reader Request (if that's okay with you) as it happens all the time to those who entertain. I have some suggestions that I think will be helpful. :)

    Warmly,
    Karla

  25. Well I am taking a courageous step but I don't like the overwhelming abundance of shabby chic. Must all furniture be distressed?
I am also jumping on the hooded chair bandwagon- reminds me of Dr.Evil or from Count Dracula's castle!

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

  26. Here goes... I hate hanging picture frames on a wall with nothing in them. I just don't get it!

  27. Hello, my name is Olivia and I can’t stand mirrored furniture. My goodness do I feel better!

  28. This is beyond the best post! I detest trends. LOVED sunburst mirrors until EVERYONE had one, same for the trellis pattern, horse themed artwork, grey/yellow and saddest of all turquoise...

The best homes are so because they tell a story about you, not copy everything that is hot and hip right now. You know what I'm saying? ;)

  29. I'll see the above reference to sunburst mirrors and raise you a sunburst clock....GAH! They were ugly then, they're ugly now. I feel lighter.

  30. I ended my Domino subscription early. Didn't like it. And, I have wanted to post some comments where I didn't like something but I feel bad.
