Mums the Word

Via Ceil Petrucelli Interiors

Indoors or out, nothing says fall quite like mums. They are affordable, easy to grow and come in a variety of colors.

Don't waste your money by buying anything but hardy mums which come back year after year. Follow a couple tips that I learned from the owner of a local greenhouse and your mums will be full and lush:
Cut back your mums to 4 inches until the 4th of July and continue to water them until Thanksgiving day. (I live in Zone 5.)

The mums in my yard just started blooming.

If you don't have a yard for planting mums, no problem, bring a pot or two indoors to decorate a mantle or perch on an entryway table.

Placing the flowers in a simple wicker basket makes for a rustic presentation.

pk at Room Remix created a pumpkin from faux mums-smart girl! She can store her creation and pull it out year after year, saving her time and money.

Have you planted any mums this year?

  2. I love this post! I bought maybe 6 potted mums on the last weekend of my vacation. Two big ones are on either side of my front door and I have 4 around the patio in my backyard. I love the way they look.

  3. Thanks so much for the shout out, Karen! Other than my little faux mumkin/daisykin/whatever-you-want-to-call-it-kin, I don't have any mums but I do love the way they look.

Hope all is well with you.

  8. My biggest decision is what color mums I want on our porch. Our house is a buttercream yellow color with white trim and black shutters. Last year I did a really nice bold purple, the year before I did some reds/oranges. Not sure which color I'd like this year but the weather is perfect to buy some now that the heat wave appears to have retreated for a while.
