You've heard it a million times, the easiest and least costly way to give your home an update is to move existing pieces to other rooms to get a new look. This is exactly what I did last Friday when I got the bright idea to move the bookcases from my great room into my dining room, killing two birds with one stone. I got rid of what wasn't working in one space and added a storage solution to the other. FYI, moving furniture by yourself is very sweat-inducing!
Before:
The bookcases weren't adding anything to the space because of their small scale.

Now
They add a casual touch to the space and some much needed contrast to the black walls.
I'll live with the new look for a while before deciding if I want to make it permanent. If I do, I'm thinking crown moulding added to the top would be a nice touch. As well, I'd like to see the backs painted in a color that contrasts with the white dishes and silver pieces.
Updating this room has been a slow process, but better to go slow than to make a decision I'll regret later.
*If anyone has any tips on how to take a decent picture in a space with a dark wall color I'd appreciate any tips you might have.
Oh, I'm a big fan of moving things around! If you only bring in things you absolutely love into your home they always find a useful place in any number of rooms. Enjoyed this post! Janell
ReplyDeleteIt's always musical furniture at my place! You've done a beautiful job with the bookcase displays! Very fresh and clean!

Absolutely. Great way to keep your home feeling fresh and new without spending a dime!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to move things around. I tend to get stuck sometimes and should do it more. Do you have plans for around the fireplace now?
ReplyDeleteI've been contemplating moving things around my apartment, too. It feels like buying new furniture without spending a dime! Looking forward to see what you do with both of these rooms.
ReplyDeleteThe white bookcases look great against the dark paint! Your idea of adding crown molding would look great! I might even add a "stacked" molding to make them even higher. We are going to be doing that to some bookcases we bought on craigslist.
ReplyDeleteI have the same issue with some of my dark spaces. You can either play with the settings on your camera or purchase some lighting. You don't need any fancy equipment. I use a prtable work light and use daylight bulbs. it's east and a cheap alternative. All you have to do is to play around with light to elimate shadows. Plus you can clip it just about anything. Hope this helps.

I like the bookcases in the dining room, and agree that crown molding would add a nice finishing touch and give them some weight. Additionally, a large-scale colorful print between them would look great against the black walls.
ReplyDeleteYou need to come to my house and work that magic!!
ReplyDeleteIf you are like me...you single handedly moved the shelves (when I get an idea, I have super human strength :)
ReplyDeleteLooks great! I love the change. I move furniture and accessories from room to room too - 'shopping' my home :).
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by our blog!
ReplyDeleteThe change looks great!
As for photographing dark colored rooms..we just try to do it during whatever time of day the room is it's brightest...it's tricky though!
Yay! And provides some great storage too! Looks great Karen! Love your new blog look too! =)
