You hear the same story this time every year: The average American puts on 5-7 lbs during the holiday season. It's hard not to what with the trays of Christmas cookies at the office, fried appetizers and egg nog at the neighbor's holiday open house and Grandma's special pecan pie on Christmas Eve. Nothing but junk food every time you turn around. This year arm yourself with a few go to festive recipes that you can bring to holiday gatherings or serve at your own celebration so that you'll have options when you get to the buffet.
Top zucchini rounds with a slice of tomato, sprinkle with a small amount of blue cheese then bake until cheese melts.

Nestle olives in a wreath of rosemary

Arrange assorted cheese cubes in the shape of a Christmas tree and embellish with herbs.

Trick the kiddies into eating their veggies this season with this fun snack: Sugar snap peas boughs, a cheese star and a pretzel trunk.
Canadian FamilyNow if only someone would come up with a zero calorie gingerbread cookie we'd be all set!

You mean there is such a thing as eating to your hearts content over the holidays and healthy eating? Bravo to that....love all these amazingly good looking examples! Thanks for the ideas, especially love the fruit 'Christmas tree"!
ReplyDeleteWhen I started eating low carb back in mid June, my goal weight was 5 pounds extra so that I could eat whatever I wanted during December and gain 5 pounds back! Alas, it was not to be, so I will have to watch the carbs during the holidays. I've lost 24 pounds so far and have no intention of gaining 5 pounds this month just because I want to eat cookies and buckeyes! I will be eating before I go to holiday parties and choosing protein and veggies once at the party!
ReplyDeleteI love those arrangements from Edible Arrangements! They are yummy! The snap pea things looks great!
ReplyDeleteGreat suggestions! That's the one thing about being away from family during this month - much less junk and sweets to worry about xo
ReplyDeleteI want every one of those, yum!
ReplyDeletetrying desperately to remember everything you said. no extra poundage for me, thank you.
ReplyDeleteofficially watching what goes in my mouth...and exercising daily.

ReplyDeleteGah! 5-7 pounds?
ReplyDeleteGuess I need to stay away from the artichoke dip this holiday season. Your suggestions are a perfect substitute though :)
