Find Me a Perfect Match

One of the major issues that I have in my great room is a lack of lighting. Easy fix, just get some lamps and I'm good to go, right? Not so fast, I don't have end tables on which to place those lamps. I'm on a mission to find the perfect side table to pair with my accent chairs to make lighting issues a thing of the past.
Because I don't want the tables I choose to compete with the detail on the side of the chairs I'm looking for a table with a fairly simple shape. Below are a few examples of tables with shapes that I'm drawn to:

Candidate #1

Candidate #2

Candidate #3

Candidate #4

Candidate #5

Candidate #6

Besides the fact that I don't want the tables I choose to compete with the detail of the chair, I need to keep in mind the finishes of the other pieces in my space and the dark wall color before making a selection. I'll also need to find tables sturdy enough to hold a lamp as well as ones that are the proper scale in relation to the chairs. After looking at a close-up of one of my chairs and a couple shots of the room, which table do you think would work best?

(Oh, keep in mind that I'm open to changing the gold finish on the coffee table.)

I have a favorite among the 6 options, but would love to hear your opinion, it might change my mind.

Have a great weekend!

  1. I love the way the legs of the coffee table curve like your chairs and wish one of the end table legs curved that way too. I really love all the options but believe my favorites are #5 (like your console table). Feel they will not fight with your chairs. Those are great chairs!

  2. At first, I was thinking that #3 perfectly mirrors the lines of your chairs, (and would look beautiful beside your sofa) but, if you would prefer the tables not repeat the design of your chairs, #4 seems to fit the look you're going for. (as long as the height and wood tone is appropriate) Have you considered something more solid, with less leg? A small, three drawer chest or even a square garden stool might add balance to the furniture arrangement, and keep the pieces from competing with each other. I always try to marry a leggy side table with a fully upholstered chair, and a solid piece with a more open side chair, like yours. The lamp base and shade you choose will add even further curves that need to be considered. Sometimes, simple is better... but, that's just my humble opinion. You have great taste, and I'm sure whatever you decide to go with will look fabulous!

  3. Karen-You need round accent tables to offset all the squared lines-furniture as well as the kitchen/great room open concept..please consider that option as well.

  4. Of the ones you've chosen, I like 2. I think the nesters would be too busy with all of their legs against all of the lines on the sides of your chair. Just to muddy the waters, what about a cute round ceramic garden stool? It would add another texture and a contrast in shape.

    Have a great weekend, Karen!

  6. i agree with another of the comments and think something simple and round would look fantastic. I also like option #2. Please, please don't change the finish on your coffee table... as it's incredible :)

  8. I like 1 or 3. ! would match more with the sofa table and the wood in the chairs. 3 would match with the coffee table and the lines on the sides of the chairs.

  9. The lines on number 2 are so pretty and fresh.

  10. I like #5...but that's because I stalk craigslist for affordable cute nesting tables and have yet to find any. I think the curves on #2 would nicely complement the straight legs of the other furniture in there!

  11. I like all of your candidates but I would select #2. The color would not compete but it would sit there like a little jewel. The curves would also highlight and compliment the curvy detail of the chair sides. It would bring attention to your chair.

  12. I like # 2.The curves would look good with your chair.

  14. Leaning toward 5, although I love the dark wood of 4. And I love the title of your blog, I was singing the song after I read it! (Find me a find...)

  15. Hi Karen, that is a lovely chair and the lines on the sides are very classy and you wouldn't want to distract from them or cover them up...I vote for the simple lines of #6 with the glass tops to accentuate the glass you have on your coffee table. And as Wendi mentioned, the lamp and shade you choose can tie it all together...Whatever you put there, it will take a little time to get used to it and see if you like it.

  16. I just love that chair -- beautiful workmanship! I think I would pick table #3 as it has similar lines and a glass top to coordinate with your coffee table and if you are open to changing your coffee table from gold, you could have them complement one another. The curved lines work well with the chair, however, the light and open feel of the table would allow the chair to take center stage. I'll be interested to see which table you choose!

  18. Hi Karen! As an interior designer turned sahm, I just love reading your blog, even though I don't often comment. I love Table #2. I like the contrast between the finishes, I think it would show off your pretty chair rather than hide it like a wood table wood. And it has some curves to it that is complimentary to your chair. I also need tables for my family room, and am stuck with old hand-me-downs for awhile. Would you mind adding links to your table sources? I like those nesting tables for my room. Also-- I love your coffee table! there is a gorgeous room with a white sofa at the Zinc Door company website that has a gorgeous room with a table very similar to yours. (maybe Ill do a blog post about that room, I love it so much). I look forward to seeing what you pick!

    1. Hi Lauren, I found all of the "candidates" via Pinterest. I typed "accent and side tables" into the search box. Hope that helps.

  19. Ugh! I feel your pain. You'd think that something as small and inconspicuous as a side table would be easy to choose, right? WRONG! There are unlimited options and each could take the design of your room of into a different direction. Good luck with your decision. For what it is worth, my favorite is Option #2.

  20. I love #2 or #3. Definitely not a dark wood as it would take away from the lovely detail on the chairs and you have quite a bit of dark wood already. I think the curvy shape of either one of these would pair really nicely with your coffee table and add a bit of lightness. :)

  21. Hello! I really like choice number 2. Must be fun to get the feedback! Looking forward to seeing which was your favorite.

  22. #2 - love the lines and the light color. Since you already have a lot of dark items in the room (including the walls), it will stand out more. Also, I think that the gold/brass you painted the table is a great fit for the chocolate walls. I have a chocolate room with silver accents and think gold would look much better in there. So I vote to keep your coffee table as-is!

  23. Since lighting is your main goal, can you put an electrical outlet under or next to your sofa? Then you could have lamps on both sides of your sofa and put a smaller table for a drink next to your chair.

    1. Anon-I wish we could do that but our home theater is just below the area and it might interfere with the electrical. I wish our builder had considered this when building the house.

  24. I like #3,#5 and #6. All great choices! The glass tops keep them airy for the space, I'm a huge fan of nesting tables! :)

  25. I guess #5 would be a perfect fit, but I love #6 nevertheless!

  28. My instinct is number 3, as it favours your current coffee table and I like the curves - elegant, but not overpowering. (And you are redoing the coffee table, so it could match. Suggest pewter tone to compliment the chair.) The chair detail is actually rather delicate, and my feeling is a square wood table may be too strong next to it. Another option would be to forego the table entirely, and get a nice floor lamp in a pewter that compliments the chair? You have the coffee table for...coffee and other drinks/books, so maybe another table is not the way forward? (Just to stir up trouble.)
